The Bembridge (Isle of Wight) Sailing Club's Redwing racing dayboat, designed by Charles Nicholson in 1896, is one of the oldest "one-designs" in the world.
He drew a 22foot hull with elegant overhangs and a long, shallow keel (Bembridge harbour is infamous for its general lack of water!). Construction was in smooth carvel (edge-to-edge) planked mahogany with canvas covered decks.
There were two rules for the rig; the total sail area must be 200sq feet or less; and the sails must be deep red (hence "redwing"). This led to some weird and wonderful innovations, but our models have what emerged to be the optimum sail plan - a high aspect Bermudan (triangular-sailed) rig with 100% jib.
