The
model is described in Alfred Albert`s book - "Das Historische Schiff als
Model",vol. IV,Koehlers verlagsgesellschaft GNBH,Herford,1990"
.
The
present model is an exact 1/100 scale of "Mirniy", and shows the ship as she looked at her construction in 1816.That is why the hull does not have
the copper-leaf covering and the typical black and white trim.
The
materials used in the creation of the model are authentic: wood, metal, cotton
sails, etc.
The whole model consists of about 10,000 parts; for instance, each
gun is made of 48 separate details!!
Everything
in the model was handmade during a period of three years.
History of Ship
On
4th July 1819, the ships of the first Russian Antarctic expedition left St. Petersburg. They were
the "Vostok" and the "Mirniy".
"Mirniy" was built in 1816 at the Kronstad ship-yard. She had the
following dimensions:
Length
- 36m (KWL), Width - 9m, and a displacement of about 630 tons.
"
Mirniy"
was first employed on guard duty around the Baltic sea
coast.
In
1818, the Emperor of Russia, Alexander I, ordered an expedition to the Southern
Ocean. For this purpose, "Mirniy" underwent a general overhaul. Her
Captain was Mikail Lasarev, later an admiral. The boarding was changed and the
spants forced. The ship was armed with 20 three-pound guns.
On
16th January 1820, "Mirniy" and "Vostok" reached the
Antarctic at altitude of 66.22' South. This is the day of the Discovery of the Antarctic.
Note: Packing and delivery charges will be calculated when enquiring about the model.
