We recently completed a project for a custom Rival 38C Ketch called Franda II. In real life, this was a sailing boat built in the 1980s, and in 2018, one of these ships completed a circumnavigation of the globe!

The vessel features an aft cockpit and a two-cabin configuration, including a forward double berth, a saloon with two settees that can be converted into sleeping spaces, a galley, a navigation station, and an aft cabin equipped with two single berths. Some models were outfitted as cutters.

A centre cockpit variant was also offered, featuring a three-cabin arrangement. This design included a forward double berth, a saloon with convertible settees, a galley, a navigation station, an aft heads compartment, and an aft cabin configured with either two single berths or a double berth.

This project was carried out for a private client in Australia, so specific details are limited.

The client was extremely pleased with their completed Franda II model, commending our clear and consistent communication throughout the process and the timely delivery. This was especially noteworthy given the challenges associated with an international transaction.

The model was expertly handcrafted using timber, acrylic, fibreglass, and detailed chrome finishes, measuring 12 inches in length. Designed with precision and attention to detail, it includes no moving parts, internal mechanisms, or lighting.

While CNC machinery was employed for some smaller elements, such as the masts, cannons, windows, and other intricate features, the majority of the construction was completed by hand.

The project took approximately six months to finish, with the payment schedule structured as follows: a 50% deposit upfront, 30% upon near completion, and the remaining 20% upon delivery. The price also included a custom-made wooden packing case, designed specifically to protect the model during transport and ensure its safe arrival.

Our Franda II model was predominantly handcrafted using timber, chrome detailing, acrylic, and fibreglass, reflecting exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship.

Before construction began, all agreements with the client were clearly outlined, including dimensions, design specifications, aesthetic preferences, financial terms, and the project timeline, ensuring complete clarity and avoiding any misunderstandings.

The process started with the hull, the foundation of any ship model. It was meticulously measured and constructed to meet precise specifications. Once the hull was completed, work progressed to the upper deck, where small wooden planks were carefully affixed along the ship’s sides, gradually concealing the internal framework. The structural supports for the masts and sails were then assembled.

The next step was painting. The hull, deck, and intricate details were finished with great care, with the lower hull painted a rich brown and accented with cream-coloured stripes. Chrome railings were added to enhance authenticity.

In the final stages, the model underwent thorough cleaning and polishing. The windows were touched up, rigging adjusted, and sails tightened. The project was completed by mounting the model on a custom wooden base, providing a professional and polished presentation. The main sail was also given its iconic striped white and brown colour scheme.

The client was thrilled with the completed model, especially impressed by the remarkable level of intricate detail. The shipping and delivery process was seamless, ensuring the model arrived in perfect condition and ready for proud display.

It was an honour to craft another bespoke sailing boat model, and we eagerly look forward to undertaking our next projects!
