Collaborative working with our clientele and technical staff has enabled Customised Ship Models to be built using a range of ‘Collective Services;’ Scale Ship Models to Desktop Ship Models, 3D Printing, Virtual Reality, Restoration, Rebranding and Refitting, Display Cases & Valuation Services. Our skilled colleagues use a variety of different techniques, modern methods and the latest technology to create that inspirational customised ship model.
Premier Ship Models have recently completed a custom order for 40 models; 20 being the Prosperity FPSO, and the other 20 being the ONE Guyana FPSO. We have previously made models for both for this particular client a couple of years ago, but this project was particularly interesting, as they wanted a higher level of detail and a premium finish this time around.
All the models were to be identical to each other, and each measured exactly 34 centimetres in length. Obviously, the Prosperity and ONE Guyana models were different, but dimensions remained the same for display purposes, and the fact that the client wished to give these out as gifts, to clients of their own. To this end, we also supplied bespoke display cases and gift boxes, all with personalised name plates.
This project was carried out for ExxonMobil themselves, the largest US-based oil and gas company, and one of America’s leading multinational energy corporations.
It’s always a pleasure to work with them, and they were thoroughly pleased with our professionalism displayed throughout the project.
The models were initially produced using advanced 3D printing techniques, before being meticulously finished by hand to achieve a refined, high-quality result.
They were manufactured entirely from ABS resin, timber and fibreglass, with selected areas enhanced by chrome detailing to improve the overall appearance.
3D printing is a highly specialised field that demands a thorough understanding of three core factors:
- The properties of the materials used
- The capabilities and limitations of the printing equipment
- The design intent and desired final aesthetic
This complex process requires considerable technical expertise. Our 3D printing specialist manages two critical stages: the development and preparation of the digital model for printing, followed by the careful refinement of the printed components to ensure a seamless, professional finish.
The bespoke Prosperity and ONE Guyana models were produced primarily using advanced 3D printing methods, incorporating fibreglass and acrylic, and finished with chrome detailing — demonstrating a high level of technical expertise, innovation and precision.
Before construction began, every aspect of the project was carefully reviewed and formally agreed with the client. This included detailed measurements, design specifications, aesthetic preferences, payment terms and the overall delivery schedule. Establishing these parameters from the outset ensured a smooth process and helped minimise the risk of miscommunication.
Construction commenced with the fabrication of the base, forming the structural core of each model. This stage required precise measurement and skilled craftsmanship to accurately replicate the original vessel. Once completed, work progressed to the upper sections, including the decking and cranes.
Painting was undertaken with exceptional attention to detail to achieve a flawless, high-quality finish. The hulls were completed in a deep maroon, while the main body incorporated white and yellow detailing.
This process was repeated until 20 models of each vessel had been produced.
ExxonMobil expressed a high level of satisfaction with the completed models, display cases and gift boxes. The successful delivery of a project of this standard depended on meticulous attention to detail and effective collaboration, and we take great pride in maintaining a professional approach throughout.
With this commission now complete, our focus turns to projects currently underway and those planned for the near future.
