Our skilled colleagues use a variety of different techniques, modern methods and the latest technology to create that inspirational customised ship model.

Premier Ship Models have recently completed a rather complex custom build of a Gaztransport & Technigaz skid. This is a highly specialised containment system used for the transportation and storage of liquified gases, particularly liquified natural gas.

GTT design cryogenic membrane containment systems which are used in both shipping and offshore storage. ‘Skid’ simply refers to a complete, pre-fabricated assembly of tanks for a specific application.

The project was completed for Gaztransport & Technigaz themselves. It’s always an honour to work with prestigious companies, and GTT are certainly no exception.

The team at GTT were highly pleased with the end result, and everything was delivered on time and to a satisfactory degree.

The model was originally produced using 3D printing technology and then meticulously finished by hand. It measured 60 centimetres in length.

They were constructed entirely from wood and fibreglass, with chrome detailing added to smaller sections to enhance their overall appearance.

3D printing is a highly specialised craft that depends on a thorough understanding of three key factors:

  • The properties of the materials used
    • The operation and capabilities of the printer
    • The design objectives and intended final outcome

This process requires significant expertise. Our 3D printing specialist oversees two main stages: firstly, the creation and preparation of the digital model for printing, and secondly, the refinement of the printed components to ensure a high-quality, professional finish.

The bespoke Skid model was largely 3D printed using timber, fibreglass, acrylic, and finished with chrome accents—reflecting a high level of technicality, technological prowess and precision.

Prior to construction, every detail was carefully reviewed and agreed with the client. This encompassed exact measurements, design specifications, aesthetic choices, the payment schedule, and the overall project timeline. Setting out clear terms from the beginning ensured a smooth process and greatly reduced the likelihood of misunderstandings.

The build commenced with the base, forming the structural backbone of the model. This phase demanded meticulous measurements and precise craftsmanship to capture the structure’s original form. With the base in place, work progressed to the upper pipes and valves, where slender pieces of metal were methodically positioned along the sides.

The painting stage was carried out with great care, aiming for a pristine, high-quality finish. The base was painted a crisp creamy white, whilst the majority of the model was finished in navy blue. In the final stages, the model was thoroughly cleaned and polished.

We’re delighted to share that the client was overjoyed with the finished model. Delivering such a high standard of quality was no easy task, but we couldn’t be prouder of the effort and dedication shown by our team. Completing this commission was a genuine pleasure, and we’re now excited to focus our energy on the projects currently in progress – and those still to come.
