Earlier this year, we completed a custom build HMS Agamemnon, based on the model we have to offer on our website. It was to measure 40 inches in length and feature a teak deck, detailed sails, and no internal mechanisms or lighting.
The HMS Agamemnon was a Royal Navy battleship equipped with 91 guns, ordered in 1849 to counter the threat posed by Napoleon III’s French fleet. It was among the earliest Royal Navy vessels to incorporate steam-powered technology, although the majority of its time at sea was spent under sail due to the inefficiencies of early steam engines.
To accommodate this dependence on sail, the ship was fitted with a full square rig across three masts. Its armament consisted of muzzle-loading, smooth-bore cannons arranged over two decks. Completed in 1852, the vessel was named Agamemnon in honour of the legendary Greek king.
The HMS Agamemnon played an active role in several engagements, including during the Crimean War under the command of Sir Edmund Lyons. Notably, it participated in the bombardment of Sevastopol in 1854 and the assault on Fort Kinburn in 1855. After its military service, the ship contributed to significant developments in communication, assisting in the laying of transatlantic telegraph cables. On 29 July 1858, it successfully helped join sections of the telegraph cables.
This project was undertaken for a private client in the United States, and as such, specific details are limited.
The client expressed great satisfaction with the completed model of the HMS Agamemnon, praising the clarity and consistency of communication throughout the process, as well as the prompt delivery. This was particularly commendable given the complexities involved in managing an international transaction.
During the course of the project, a modification was made to the original plan. Initially, the client considered a 30-inch model but later decided to increase the length to 40 inches.
The model was meticulously handcrafted from timber, acrylic, fibreglass, and finished with detailed chrome accents, measuring 40 inches in length. It was crafted with precision and attention to detail, though it features no moving parts, internal mechanisms, or lighting.
While CNC machinery was utilised for smaller components such as the masts, cannons, windows, and other intricate elements, the majority of the construction was carried out by hand.
The project required approximately six months to complete. The payment schedule was structured as follows: a 40% deposit was paid at the outset, followed by 30% upon near completion, with the final 30% due upon delivery. The overall price included a custom wooden packing case, specifically designed to safeguard the model during transit and ensure its secure arrival.
Our HMS Agamemnon model was predominantly handcrafted from timber, chrome detailing, acrylic, and fibreglass, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Before construction commenced, all agreements with the client were clearly established. This included specifications for dimensions, design, aesthetics, financial terms, and the project timeline, ensuring complete transparency and avoiding potential misunderstandings.
The process began with the hull, the foundation of any ship model. It was carefully measured and constructed to precise specifications. Once the hull was completed, work moved to the upper deck, where small wooden planks were meticulously attached along the sides of the ship, gradually concealing the internal framework. Structural supports for the masts and sails were then added.
The next phase involved painting. The hull, deck, and intricate details were finished with precision, featuring a rich brown lower hull accented with soft yellow and a sharp black design. Small white and teal lifeboats were included to enhance the model’s realism.
In the final stages, the model underwent thorough cleaning and polishing. Touch-ups were applied to the cannons, rigging was adjusted, and sails were tightened. The project was completed by mounting the model on a custom wooden base, providing a professional and refined presentation.
The client was delighted with the finished model, particularly impressed by the extraordinary level of intricate detail. The shipping and delivery process was smooth and efficient, ensuring the model arrived in pristine condition, ready for proud display.
It was a privilege to create another bespoke model of a historic vessel, and we eagerly anticipate embarking on future projects!
