Our skilled colleagues use a variety of different techniques, modern methods and the latest technology to create that inspirational customise ship model.
We have recently completed a custom project for three static floating ship models, all of them being identical Lake Taupō Coast Guard vessels. In real life, these ships are RHIBs (Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boats) that patrol the lake and ensure people’s safety.
Lake Taupō, situated in New Zealand’s North Island, is a large crater lake formed within the caldera of the Taupō Volcano. The lake lends its name to the town of Taupō, located along a bay on its northeastern shore. Covering an area of 238 square miles, it is New Zealand’s largest lake by surface area and ranks as the second largest freshwater lake by surface area in Oceania, following Lake Murray in Papua New Guinea. Motutaiko Island is located in the lake’s southeastern region.
Each of these models were to measure 24 inches in length, and be without internal mechanisms, illumination and any mechanically moving parts. They were all primarily handcrafted in our workshop, and the builds were enhanced utilising CNC technology and laser machinery for smaller parts. Made from wood, fibre glass, and finished with chrome detailing, these brilliant Lake Taupō Coast Guard models made for wonderful display items full of character.
This project was completed for a private client based in New Zealand, and so not much can be said here as per usual, however, they were delighted with our clear and concise levels of communication presented throughout the duration of the project.
The models were crafted predominantly by hand, using timber, fibreglass, and detailed chrome accents, each measuring 24 inches in length. They were designed to be highly intricate and exceptionally accurate, with no moving parts, internal mechanisms, or lighting. Notably, each model is buoyant and capable of floating on water.
Although CNC machinery was used for select smaller components, such as lifesavers, motors, aerials, and other minor details, the vast majority of the assembly was completed by hand.
The estimated build time from start to finish was four months, with the payment schedule arranged as follows: a 50% deposit at the start, 30% upon near-completion, and the final 20% on delivery. The cost also included a sturdy wooden packing case, specifically designed to protect the model during transportation and guarantee safe delivery.
Our models of the Lake Taupō Coast Guard boats, as previously described, were primarily handcrafted, employing materials such as timber, chrome accents, acrylic, and fibreglass.
Before beginning construction, we ensured that all details were clearly agreed upon with the client, including dimensions, specific design elements, aesthetic considerations, financial terms, and a timeline, to avoid any misunderstandings.
The process always begins with the hull, as it forms the foundation for any ship model. The hull was meticulously measured to precise specifications. Once completed, we began work on the upper deck, applying smaller wooden planks along the vessel’s sides to gradually enclose the top and hide the internal structure. Following this, we constructed the framework for the bridge and aerials.
Next, we painted the hull, deck, and finer details, adding chrome elements for enhanced realism. The lower hull was finished in a bright, highly visible orange with a thin black stripe running along its length. The models were further enhanced with realistic lettering and decals, displaying the ship’s name, purpose, and other identifiers.
For additional realism, lifesavers were positioned outside the bridge near the door, and the paintwork was given a glossy, waterproof finish. In the final stages, each model was thoroughly cleaned and polished. Windows were painted black, and a detachable wooden base was added to complete the project.
The client was delighted with the finished product, particularly admiring the high level of detail we managed to capture. Shipping and delivery proceeded smoothly, enabling the client to showcase the models with pride.
Creating these custom coast guard models was a rewarding experience, and we are excitedly anticipating the unique projects ahead!
