Purus Horizon (Larger Models)

A few months back, we shared a case study detailing an order for eight Purus Horizon model ships (previously known as the Edda Passat). Of these, three are identical, measuring 38 centimetres in length, 16 centimetres in width, and 22 centimetres in height, while the other five are larger models, each measuring 118 centimetres in length. The three smaller models were crafted by our specialist 3D-printing partner offsite, fulfilling the first phase of the order, with the remaining five larger models, comprising the second phase, being built in our workshop.

The five larger models are now all complete, thanks to some brilliant work from our specialists, and here we will showcase what we have achieved!

The Purus Horizon was formerly owned by Edda Winds and, as mentioned above, was known as the Edda Passat. It was acquired by Purus and renamed to join their fleet of construction and service operation vessels.

This highly versatile ship is capable of performing a range of tasks across various construction and operational phases, including transporting essential components, providing accommodation, and serving as a platform for cranes.

The client was Purus themselves. They are a leading company in maritime services for the global energy sector, with particular expertise in gas transport and the offshore wind industry.

Purus operates one of the world’s most modern and extensive fleets, including gas carriers, construction support vessels, and crew transfer vessels. Committed to driving maritime decarbonisation, they implement advanced technologies such as clean fuels, energy-efficient systems, electrification, and carbon capture.

With half a dozen offices and an operational hub across the globe, Purus offers a complete range of services—from technical and commercial ship management to vessel design, contract management, newbuild supervision, and crewing solutions.

The models were primarily crafted by hand, using timber, fibreglass, and small chrome accents, and was set at a length of 118 centimetres. Designed to achieve high levels of detail and precision, the model features no moving parts, internal mechanisms, or lighting.

Although CNC machinery was used for finer details—such as the aerials, propellers, crates, walkways, and other small features—most of the model was assembled through meticulous handcrafting.

The projected build time from start to finish was four months, with the payment schedule divided into a 50% deposit at the outset, 30% upon nearing completion, and the final 20% due at delivery. Sturdy wooden crates, custom-built to protect the models during transport, were included in the overall cost to ensure safe arrival.

Our five larger Purus Horizon models, as previously mentioned, were predominantly handcrafted, using materials like timber, chrome accents, acrylic, and fibreglass.

Before construction commenced, we confirmed that all terms were thoroughly clarified with the client, covering dimensions, design specifics, aesthetics, financial arrangements, and the project timeline to ensure there was no ambiguity.

We began with the hull, which forms the foundation of any ship model. The hull was meticulously measured and crafted to meet exact specifications. With the hull complete, we moved on to the upper deck, applying narrow wooden planks along the sides, gradually covering the structure to hide internal supports. We then started on the basic framework for the bridge and the aerials.

Once the primary structures were in place, we painted the hull, deck, and finer details, and then fitted chrome accents. The lower part of the hull was finished in a rich black, while the majority of the model was painted navy blue with white decals, white decking, and select black accents on parts of the walkways. Additionally, crates were painted grey, and a support vessel was attached on one side.

As we neared completion, the model was given a thorough cleaning and polish. The windows were painted black, and finally, we fitted the model to the wooden base to signify the project’s completion.

Purus were delighted with the final five larger models and appreciated the consistent communication throughout the project.

It was a pleasure to create these detailed representations of the impressive Purus Horizon, and a true privilege to bring their vision into reality. Now, we’re excited to turn our attention to new projects on the horizon!
