Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost (Restoration)

A few months ago, we were tasked with a restoration job for a Silver Ghost car model. The model itself needed a new windscreen, a deep clean, some paint touch-ups and a few other miscellaneous repairs.

The Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost was produced between 1906 and 1926, with almost 8000 being made. It is a car of grandeur and luxury, with Rolls-Royce claiming at the time that it was the best car in the world. It certainly had the looks to warrant such a compliment. The Silver Ghost was actually the origin of Rolls-Royce claiming this, which went on to be a phrase coined by Autocar when referring to their machines.

It was powered by a straight 6 engine, and the engine and chassis were used as the base for the Rolls-Royce Armoured Cars which were used by the British military during World War I.

This project was carried out for a private client, which is why we are unable to disclose specific details. The client was extremely pleased with our clear communication and efficient management of the project, and they were thrilled with the final result!

We thoroughly enjoyed helping to realise their vision, resulting in an impressive memento to be proudly displayed.

Every restoration project requires thorough communication at every stage: prior to, during, and after the work. Our outstanding restorer starts by consulting with the client and our team, ensuring all requirements are met within the agreed budget.

We then examine the various tools and techniques to be used, especially focusing on older and more delicate models that need extra care and precision. With car models, even small components like door handles and hubcaps can present significant challenges.

This is a classic car model, and so the above was pertinent here.

Firstly, our restorer gave the Silver Ghost a deep clean to clear out any debris and detritus.

In this instance, the most challenging part was the windscreen, which was next on the to-do list. It was challenging as it was very delicate, however, our restorer managed to fit a new one with expert precision and care.

Afterwards, our restorer worked on touching up the paint scheme, before attending to the smaller repairs, and finally finishing off with another deep clean of the model.

The initial stages of any restoration project involve detailed discussions between our team, the client, and our expert restorer. This collaborative approach ensures the client’s vision and expectations are understood, while also establishing a realistic and satisfactory timeline and budget for all parties involved.

At the earliest possible stage, a preliminary invoice is prepared for the client, allowing everyone to adhere to a schedule within a defined budget. Once the client approves, the restoration work can officially begin.

Our restorer typically starts with larger components of the model, in this case; the windscreen. He will then polish out any scratches and paint over smaller imperfections as needed, ensuring the exact paint colour is matched.

Next, he will carefully replace or repair smaller details, such as hubcaps and minor parts of the interior, pertaining to things like steering wheels, dials and seats. Although this is often the most meticulous part of the process, our restorer handles these tasks effortlessly, and this project was no exception; it was executed superbly.

A significant enhancement made was the installation of a brand-new acrylic display case. Designed to be tasteful and minimalistic, it does not detract from the model’s grandeur. The case ensures long-term protection from scratches, dust, and general wear and tear, allowing the model to maintain its excellent quality for a longer period.

The client was left thrilled with the finished product, having their Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost model restored to its former glory and grandeur, reflecting its real-life counterpart.

It was a pleasure to be able to work on a car model as eloquent as this one, and walking away with another happy customer was of course our main priority!

We now eagerly look forward to our next projects, consisting of restoration jobs, custom models, and much more!
