Premier Ship Models have recently completed a custom build for the famous USS Prairie AD-15, a dixie-class destroyer that was constructed just before World War II.

Her main task was to aid and service other destroyers near battle areas to keep them ready and fit for service.

She had a displacement of 16,500 tones, and a length of just over 160 metres. After World War II, she operated throughout the Korean War, and then was subsequently decommissioned years later in 1993, after 52 years’ worth of service.

Our model equivalent was to be complete in striking detail, measuring 36 inches in length and being without any illumination or internal mechanisms, meaning it was a wholly static model.

This project was undertaken for a private client in the United States, necessitating discretion concerning certain details.

The client was highly impressed with the completed model of the USS Prairie destroyer, praising the project for its clear and consistent communication throughout each stage. They also commended the efficiency in adhering to deadlines. The successful completion was especially remarkable given the complexities of managing an international project of this scale.

The model was meticulously handcrafted using timber, acrylic, and fibreglass, with intricate chrome accents adding a refined finish. Measuring 36 inches in length, it was crafted with outstanding precision and attention to detail, though it does not feature moving parts, internal mechanisms, or lighting.

CNC machinery was utilised to produce smaller components such as railings, guns, windows, and aerials, but the majority of the construction was carried out by hand.

The project took approximately five months to complete. The payment schedule was structured as follows: a 50% deposit was required at the outset, followed by a further 30% upon near completion, with the final 20% settled upon delivery. The total cost included a custom-built wooden packing case, designed specifically to protect the model during transit and ensure its safe arrival.

The USS Prairie model was primarily handcrafted using timber, fibreglass, acrylic, and chrome detailing, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail.

Before construction commenced, all agreements with the client were clearly defined, covering dimensions, design, aesthetic preferences, financial arrangements, and the project timeline. These measures ensured complete transparency and minimised the risk of misunderstandings.

The process began with the construction of the hull, the fundamental component of any ship model. It was precisely measured and crafted to exact specifications. Once completed, attention shifted to the upper deck, where small wooden planks were carefully affixed to the ship’s sides, gradually concealing the internal framework. Structural supports for the stacks and bridge were then installed.

Next came the painting stage, during which the hull, deck, and finer details were finished with precision. The lower hull was painted a deep crimson, complemented by a black stripe for added authenticity. The remainder of the vessel was finished in gunmetal grey, with additional black detailing.

In the final stages, the model underwent a thorough cleaning and polishing process. Windows were touched up, railings polished, and the guns refined for a uniform appearance. The model was then mounted on a bespoke wooden base, providing a professional and elegant display to complete the project.

The client was extremely pleased with the finished model, commending its exceptional craftsmanship and intricate detailing. Shipping and delivery were carried out seamlessly, ensuring the model arrived in perfect condition, ready for immediate display.

This project was a highly rewarding opportunity to recreate a historic Second World War-era destroyer with exquisite detail. We look forward to embracing new challenges in the creation of bespoke models in the future!
