MDM Props are a London–‐based manufacturer and supplier of small/large scale props, models and scenic construction with over 20 years experience and reputation of delivering the best service and quality. Prior to undertaking this particular project, Premier Ship Models had worked with MDM previously. The good service we provided the first time resulted in a second request from them for a new model of the HMS Victory, which would later take its place on the fourth plinth of Trafalgar Square.

The required length of the model was between 2 and 2.5 metres. The wood used for construction needed to be environmentally friendly and the client specifically asked for sails to be kept down. We later found out that the reason for this was the sails for the model were to be designed by Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare. Therefore we had to provide the model flatpacked and with the masts in place, but they later completed the rigging.

Once MDM and the Mayor of London approved the project, we then had only 5 weeks to deliver the model to Trafalgar Square’s plinth. This meant we stopped all other production in our workshop to focus on meeting the deadline. Throughout the build,we liaised closely with the curator of the real HMS Victory in Portsmouth, UK. He provided us with photos and plans to help make the model as accurate as possible.

The model was well received by MDM and the Mayor of London. It remained on the fourth plinth for a year, after which time the National Maritime Museum purchased the model for £300,000, a far greater value than the £10,000 we sold it for. We agreed before beginning the project to sign a 5 year NDA agreement. With the NDA agreement now finished, we are happy to share news of this project with our customers.

“ Thanks for the Ship – we’ve just unpacked it and it looks great – congratulations to your team.” Lynn Thomson Project Manager MDM Props Limited ”
