Premier Ship Models have recently completed a custom build for the wonderful French sailing vessel, Beg Hir. She sails under the flag of France and has a length of 11 metres, with a width of 4 metres.
Our model equivalent was to measure 60 centimetres in length, and was complete in stunning detail.
This project was carried out for a private client based in France, which limits the amount of detail we can publicly disclose.
The client was delighted with their Beg Hir model, commending the clear and consistent communication throughout the process, along with the prompt and efficient delivery – all the more impressive given the challenges of coordinating an international order.
The model was expertly handcrafted using a combination of timber, acrylic, and fibreglass, enhanced with refined chrome detailing and measuring 60 centimetres in length. Designed with exceptional accuracy and attention to detail, it does not incorporate any moving parts, internal components, or built-in lighting.
Although CNC equipment was employed to produce some of the finer elements – such as the precisely shaped hatches and windows—the vast majority of the construction was completed by hand.
The project spanned roughly three months from inception to completion. Payment was divided into three phases: an upfront deposit of 50% to commence work, a subsequent 30% nearing completion, and the remaining 20% upon final delivery. The total cost also included a bespoke wooden transport case, specifically crafted to safeguard the model during shipping and ensure it arrived in flawless condition.
Our Beg Hir model was predominantly handcrafted using timber, acrylic, and fibreglass, finished with elegant chrome accents—demonstrating exceptional craftsmanship and an acute eye for detail.
Before construction began, every aspect of the project was carefully reviewed and agreed upon with the client. This included the model’s dimensions, design features, aesthetic choices, payment structure, and overall timeline—ensuring clarity from the outset and minimising the risk of miscommunication.
The build commenced with the hull, which formed the backbone of the model. It was measured and constructed with precision to meet exact specifications. With the hull complete, attention turned to the upper deck, where individual wooden planks were methodically laid along the vessel’s sides, gradually concealing the internal structure. Mounts for the masts and sails were then installed.
Painting followed as the next major stage. The hull, deck, and intricate components were finished with careful attention to colour and detail—a rich brown lower hull contrasted with soft cream, warm brown, and clean white highlights. The sails were created in a refined white fabric, and the deck was adorned with intricate wooden inlays to provide a bespoke touch. ‘Beg Hir’ was added as a decal to the rear, along with ‘Year 1971, Pointe Noire, Congo. This provided another layer of realism for the client.
In the final phase, the model was meticulously cleaned and polished. Railings and hatches were finely adjusted, the rigging carefully tensioned, and the wheel delicately refined. The completed piece was then mounted on a custom-crafted wooden base, offering a polished and professional display.
The client was delighted with the finished model, particularly highlighting the superb craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. Delivery was managed seamlessly, and the piece arrived in pristine condition, ready for display.
It was a genuine pleasure to create another bespoke sailing boat replica, and we look forward to realising more distinctive and imaginative projects in the future.
