Premier Ship Models have recently completed a custom build for a Discovery Yacht 55 model. These vessels are ideal cruising yachts for small crews, and she sails with great ease and comfort. Thanks to her streamlined hull, the Discovery Yacht 55 is extremely fast and cuts through the water seamlessly.

Founded in 1998, Discovery Yachts set out to create the ultimate sailing yachts, designed for two people to embark on global adventures. Combining superior craftsmanship, safety, luxury, and performance, the Discovery 55 has gained a strong reputation, becoming a popular choice for both charter companies and individuals seeking a truly memorable sailing experience.

Headquartered in Southampton, Discovery Yachts has swiftly grown into a successful yacht-building enterprise, employing over 100 skilled professionals, including naval architects, designers, and master yacht builders. The company now produces around 10 yachts per year, each crafted to the highest standards of quality and luxury, with bespoke features tailored to each owner’s preferences.

This particular model was largely based off of the model we provide already, with a few details customised to make it more personal, such as the colours and the name. It was to measure 77 centimetres in length, 23 in width and 110 in height, thanks to its large sails.

This project was completed for a private client based in Hong Kong, so limited details can be shared here.

The client was extremely pleased with their finished Discovery Yacht 55, as well as our clear and consistent communication throughout the process and the timely delivery—especially noteworthy given it was an international transaction.

The model was primarily handcrafted using timber, fibreglass, and small chrome details, with dimensions set at 77 centimetres in length, 23 centimetres in width, and 110 centimetres in height. It was designed to be highly detailed and extremely accurate, without any moving parts, internal mechanisms, or lighting.

While CNC machinery was employed for some smaller components, such as the masts, propellers, buoys, and other minor elements, the vast majority of the work was carried out by hand.

The estimated build time was three months from start to finish, with the payment schedule structured as follows: a 50% deposit upfront, 30% upon nearing completion, and the remaining 20% due on delivery. The cost also included a robust wooden packing case, specially designed to protect the model during transit and ensure its safe arrival.

Our model of the Discovery Yacht 55, as previously noted, was largely handcrafted, utilising timber, chrome accents, acrylic, and fibreglass.

Before construction began, we ensured that all agreements with the client were clearly established, covering dimensions, specific design details, aesthetics, financial terms, and a timeline to avoid any ambiguity.

We always start with the hull, as it serves as the foundation for any ship model. As is standard practice, the hull was carefully measured to meet the exact specifications. Once the hull was completed, we proceeded to lay the groundwork for the upper deck. Smaller wooden planks were applied along the ship’s sides, gradually covering the top to conceal the internal reinforcements. After this, we began constructing the basic framework for the masts and sails.

Next, the hull, deck, and finer details were painted, followed by the fitting of chrome detailing. The lower section of the hull was finished in a deep black, with thin red and white stripes, and a custom decal added towards the bow.

To enhance its realism, small white and blue buoys were affixed to the railings along the sides.

As we approached the final stages, the model was thoroughly cleaned and polished. The windows were painted, the rigging was neatened, and the sails were tightened. Finally, the wooden base was added to complete the project.

The client was thrilled with the final result and especially impressed by the level of intricate detail we were able to achieve. The shipping and delivery went seamlessly, allowing them to proudly display their model.

It was a pleasure to craft another bespoke yacht model, and we are now eagerly looking forward to our upcoming projects!
