One of the more complex projects Premier Ship Models have carried out recently is an order for three Griffon Hoverwork 12000TD models. They were all to measure 75 centimetres in length, however, the first was to be completely static, with no removable pieces, whilst the latter two required detachable roofs and internal detailing.
Griffon Hoverwork is a very reputable British hovercraft designer and manufacturer, originally founded in 1976 and based out of Southampton. Their 12000TD craft is perhaps one of their most famous vessels, measuring almost 24 metres in length, and able to carry 80 passengers and a payload worth 12,000 kilograms. It maintains the robust nature of their company’s legacy, whilst incorporating new technology to make it as comfortable and lightweight as possible.
This project was carried out for Griffon Hoverwork themselves – it was an honour to collaborate with a company as esteemed as theirs, and a privilege to be entrusted with such an important project.
Each of the three models was expertly constructed using a blend of wood, acrylic, and fibreglass, with sleek chrome detailing contributing to their sophisticated appearance. Measuring 75 centimetres in length, they showcase exceptional craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. As previously mentioned, the first model contains no moving elements or internal workings, whereas the latter two incorporate both.
Although CNC machinery was employed for the more intricate features—such as the skirting, windows, fans, and ladders—the majority of the build was carried out by hand, resulting in a truly tailor-made finish.
The payment arrangement was divided into three stages: an upfront deposit of 50% to initiate the project, followed by a 30% payment as the models approached completion, with the final 20% settled prior to delivery. The total price also encompassed custom-crafted wooden crates, purpose-built to safeguard the models during transportation and ensure their secure arrival.
The bespoke Griffon Hoverwork 12000TD models were largely handcrafted using timber, fibreglass, acrylic, and finished with chrome accents—reflecting a high level of artistry and precision.
Prior to construction, every detail was carefully reviewed and agreed with the client. This encompassed exact measurements, design specifications, aesthetic choices, the payment schedule, and the overall project timeline. Setting out clear terms from the beginning ensured a smooth process and greatly reduced the likelihood of misunderstandings.
The build commenced with the hull, forming the structural backbone of the model. This phase demanded meticulous measurements and precise craftsmanship to capture the vessel’s original form. With the hull in place, work progressed to the upper deck, where slender wooden strips were methodically positioned along the sides to conceal the internal structure. Rear fan supports were then added to complete the core framework.
The painting stage was carried out with great care, aiming for a pristine, high-quality finish. The hull was painted a crisp white, accented with a starry blue motif to heighten the model’s realism.
In the final stages, each model was thoroughly cleaned and polished. Windows were made crystal clear, railings and ladders were polished to a lustrous finish, and the fans were carefully aligned and cleaned to complete the refined appearance. The models were then mounted on individually handcrafted wooden bases, presenting them as elegant, display-ready centrepieces.
Unfortunately, a couple of the models sustained some minor damage in transportation, and so some small fixes were made before delivery was eventually made. Upon arrival, the client was very pleased with the finished result.
On our end, it was a pleasure to work on these models, and we now look forward to our next projects!
