Premier Ship Models has just finished an intricate bespoke project — the construction of a Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) LNG carrier. In the maritime industry, LNG refers to liquefied natural gas, and GTT are renowned experts in its transportation and storage.
The company also develops advanced cryogenic membrane containment systems used in both marine and offshore storage applications. Their Mark and NO membrane technologies deliver a dependable and secure solution for the large-scale storage and transport of LNG.
The project was commissioned directly by Gaztransport & Technigaz. It is always a privilege to collaborate with such esteemed organisations, and GTT is certainly no exception.
The GTT team expressed great satisfaction with the final model, which was completed punctually and to an excellent standard.
The model was initially created using 3D printing technology before being carefully finished by hand. Built to a 1:200 scale, the project took five months to complete.
It was crafted entirely from wood and fibreglass, with chrome detailing applied to smaller components to enhance their visual appeal.
3D printing is a highly skilled discipline that relies on a deep understanding of three essential aspects:
- The characteristics of the materials employed
- The functionality and limitations of the printer
- The design objectives and desired final result
This process demands considerable expertise. Our 3D printing specialist manages two key stages: firstly, the development and preparation of the digital model for printing, and secondly, the refinement of the printed parts to achieve a precise, professional finish.
The bespoke LNG Carrier model was primarily produced through 3D printing, using a combination of articulated foil, fibreglass, and acrylic, and completed with chrome detailing. The result showcased an exceptional degree of technical skill, innovation, and precision.
Before construction began, every element was thoroughly reviewed and approved by the client. This included exact measurements, design details, aesthetic preferences, the payment plan, and the overall project schedule. Establishing clear parameters from the outset ensured a smooth workflow and minimised the risk of miscommunication.
The build commenced with the base, which served as the structural foundation of the model. This stage required careful measurement and exacting craftsmanship to accurately replicate the vessel’s original form. Once the base was complete, attention turned to the hull, upper deck, and bridge, where fine metal components were carefully fitted along the sides.
Painting was undertaken with meticulous attention to detail to achieve a flawless, high-quality finish. The base was coated in a clean, creamy white, while the main body of the model featured rich crimson and deep midnight blue tones. LNG was added in emboldened white lettering on the side for further realism, and the side of the ship was removable to allow visual access for the illuminated interior.
In the final phase, the model was carefully cleaned and polished to perfection, and then the model was then complimented with a bespoke display case, for added protection.
We’re thrilled to report that the client was absolutely delighted with the completed model. Achieving such a high level of quality was no small feat, and we couldn’t be prouder of the skill and commitment demonstrated by our team. Completing this commission was a true pleasure, and we now look forward to channelling our enthusiasm into the projects currently underway – as well as those on the horizon.
