At Premier Ship Models, we often get requests for kit models to arrive pre-built, and that was the case for this magnificent HMS Terror model kit, by OcCre. You can view it here:

Launched in 1813, HMS Terror was a purpose-built warship for the Royal Navy. She saw action in numerous engagements, including the Battle of Baltimore—a fitting legacy for a vessel with such a fearsome name. Later in her service, Terror was refitted for Arctic exploration and tragically vanished during Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated 1845 expedition to navigate the Northwest Passage.
Decades passed until, in 2016, the remarkable discovery of her wreckage was made public!
Building this kit was relatively simple, and so this is a perfect place to start if you’re looking to take up model-making yourself.
This project was carried out for a private client in the UK, and so we cannot go into extensive detail.
They were, however, thoroughly pleased with the outcome of the build, and the timeliness at which we delivered the finished product.
The HMS Terror model kit weighs approximately 7 kilograms, and it measures 68 centimetres in length and 50 in height, meaning it’s at a scale of 1 to 75 when compared to the real-life equivalent.
All necessary instructions are provided in English, French and Spanish.
The entirety of the project spanned 6 months, from start to finish, and this included construction, painting, packaging and delivery.
This model of HMS Terror is largely handcrafted using wood, acrylic, and fibreglass, enhanced with tasteful chrome finishes that reflect both fine craftsmanship and a keen eye for precision.
Prior to starting the build, a number of project elements were thoroughly reviewed and agreed with the client. These included the payment terms and overall schedule—providing clear expectations from the beginning and reducing the likelihood of misunderstandings.
It was agreed that an initial 25% deposit would be taken, followed by a further 25% upon commencement of the build. A third payment of 30% was due once the model neared completion, with the final 20% payable upon delivery of the finished piece.
Construction began with the hull, the foundational element of the model. Once this was completed, work progressed to the upper deck, where each wooden plank was carefully positioned along the ship’s sides, gradually enclosing the interior framework. Supports for the masts and sails were then fitted.
The next significant stage was painting. The hull, deck, and detailed elements were finished with careful consideration for both tone and accuracy—a deep black lower hull paired with soft cream, warm wood tones, and crisp white accents. The sails were fashioned from a fine white fabric, while the deck featured elegant wooden inlays to add a bespoke, handcrafted quality.
In the final stages, the model was thoroughly cleaned and polished. Finishing touches included the careful alignment of railings and hatches, precise adjustment of the rigging, and delicate refinements to the ship’s wheel—bringing the entire piece to life with meticulous attention to detail.
The client was absolutely delighted with their complete HMS Terror model kit, and it’s always a pleasure to build them for our terrific customers!
We now look forward to our other ongoing projects!
