We have recently completed a custom build project for the Oceanis 37.1, a magnificent sailing yacht manufactured by Beneteau. It is named as such because it measures in at 37 feet in length, and utilises innovation born from generations of previous Oceanis cruisers.
At the time of writing, the Oceanis 37.1 is the eighth vessel launched since 2017, and it is massively innovative and green. It features eco-friendly solutions like the option to add an electric motor, as well as an iroko slatted cockpit floor.
The vessel itself is beautiful, with a spectacular open deck with no back stays, allowing for fantastic views and access to the ocean air. The same layout was used in the Oceanis 30.1 and 34.1, resulting in terrific levels of performance. Furthermore, to ensure easy and controllable handling, all of the rigging is brought back to two aft winches, and every instrument can be found on the starboard helm console.
With a flared hull, the vessel is fluid when moving through the water, and retains a brilliant sense of balance and equilibrium when travelling at any speed. This also improves on the rigidity of the hull, and manages the weight well.
Building this particular model was an absolute pleasure, as it’s such a beautiful craft in real life! It’s always an honour to work on sailing yacht models, and Beneteau certainly know how to make them!
This project was carried out for a private client, and so not much can be said here. However, they were thrilled with the level of transparency we exhibited throughout the duration of the build, and were also extremely pleased with the timeliness at which we delivered the model, as well as the overall build quality.
This Oceanis 37.1 model was to be handcrafted from wood, with metal beams to support the sails, and an acrylic base for added support. It was to measure 48 centimetres in length, and to be complete with a fully detailed exterior, an exquisite high-end paint scheme, customised naming on the outside, and no interior or internal mechanisms or lighting.
The build time was scheduled at 4 months, and payment would be split as so: a 50% deposit at the start, 30% once the model was almost finished, and the final 20% commencing the delivery date.
Our model rendition of the Oceanis 37.1 was made entirely by hand, and so it was composed of wood, metallic detailing, acrylic and fibreglass. Before any construction could be done, agreements were made between PSM and the client, and we also contacted Beneteau to get the exact specifications of the real-life vessel. Dimensions, details and aesthetics needed to be established, as well as the financial side of things, and of course a schedule.
First the hull was constructed, measured precisely to fulfil the specific requirements. After this, the foundations for the upper deck were made, with smaller wooden planks being placed on the flanks of the ship, and they eventually lined the top of the ship, concealing the interior reinforcements. Subsequent additions were made, with the base for the sails and a console being incorporated.
The next steps were painting the hull, deck and more miscellaneous details, as well as fitting the ship with its rigging, a windshield and the sails themselves. The base of the hull was painted a clean and light blue, with the upper remainder being a neat white with black decals, and the deck was adorned in a light brown, as well as white and some black detailing, as well as chrome.
With the build coming to a close, the rigging was tied up and the paint polished. The Oceanis 37.1 was then branded with ‘First 37.1’ running along the sides, finalising the building process.
The final product was one of stunning detail and intricacy, with a subtle black base for added support and longevity for the model as a whole.
It was delivered to the client without a hitch, and they were highly satisfied with the work carried out by us, together with the speed and efficiency at which we provided the model.
Overall, the project was completed right on schedule and to the best quality, with every party left pleased. We couldn’t be happier with the end result, and it was a pleasure to build a custom ship model as beautiful as the Oceanis 37.1!
