We have recently completed a custom-built model of the River Boyne bulk carrier, based in Australia and named after the river in Northern Ireland.
The real-life vessel is now called the SS Rover 11, after being renamed back in 2012, and it is now decommissioned. It measured an enormous 255 metres in length, and had a gross tonnage of over 51,000!
Our model equivalent was to measure exactly a metre in length, and be complete in striking detail, without any internal mechanisms or illumination, meaning it was a wholly static model. It serves as a homage to the late vessel, for the client.
This project was commissioned by an international client in Australia, and so we cannot delve into a great deal of detail.
They were absolutely delighted with our River Boyne model, praising our seamless and transparent communication, as well as our ability to deliver flawlessly and on time—no small feat given the complexities of working across borders!
This model was expertly crafted using timber, acrylic, and fibreglass, complemented by refined chrome detailing. Measuring 100 centimetres in length, it showcases exceptional precision and craftsmanship. However, it does not feature moving parts, internal mechanisms, or lighting.
While CNC machinery was utilised for intricate details, such as the finely designed hatches, the majority of the construction was completed by hand.
The project required approximately six months to complete. Payment was structured in three stages: a 50% deposit to commence work, a further 30% as the project neared completion, and the remaining 20% upon delivery. The final cost also included a custom-built wooden packing case, ensuring the model’s protection during transit.
Our River Boyne model was predominantly handcrafted using timber, acrylic, fibreglass, and chrome detailing, demonstrating a high level of skill and precision.
Before construction commenced, we collaborated closely with the client to refine every aspect of the design, including dimensions, aesthetics, key features, budget, and timeline. This thorough planning process ensured clear expectations and minimised the risk of misunderstandings.
The build began with the hull, which was carefully measured and assembled to exact specifications. Once completed, attention shifted to the upper deck, where individual wooden planks were meticulously positioned along the vessel’s sides, gradually enclosing the internal framework. Structural supports for the bridge and funnels were then integrated.
The painting process was a key stage in bringing the model to life. The hull was finished in a deep red with a black upper section, while the bridge was painted crisp white. An authentic ‘River Boyne’ decal was then applied to the side in a professional white font.
In the final stages, the model underwent detailed finishing touches. Railings were adjusted, windows were carefully painted, and the entire structure was polished to enhance its presentation. To complete the display, the model was securely mounted on a custom wooden base, ensuring a refined and professional showcase.
The client was highly impressed with the final model, commending its exceptional craftsmanship and intricate detailing. Careful handling during shipping ensured it arrived in pristine condition, ready for display.
Creating this bespoke bulk carrier replica was a highly rewarding project, and we look forward to bringing more unique commissions to life in the future.
