Our skilled colleagues use a variety of different techniques, modern methods and the latest technology to create that inspirational customise ship model.

Premier Ship Models have recently completed a custom build of the SS American Scout C2. The real-life cargo ship was one of the very first standardised designs developed by the US Maritime Commission.

This marked a major leap in technology from World War I-era vessels, as the C2 was capable of reaching speeds of up to 15.5 knots, and could carry an estimated 500,000 cubic feet worth of cargo. Nowadays, this number isn’t extraordinary, but for the time, it was revolutionary.

Our model equivalent underwent a few changes for the client, one being the renaming to Flying Clipper, along with the inclusion of the name ‘Isbrandtsen’ along the side of the ship, and having the funnel in a tan colour.

Commissioned by a private international client, this project remains largely confidential.

The client was highly satisfied with the SS American Scout model, commending our clear and consistent communication, as well as the smooth and timely delivery—particularly considering the challenges of working across borders.

This model was meticulously handcrafted from timber, acrylic, and fibreglass, featuring elegant chrome detailing. Measuring 87cm in length, 11.5cm in width, and 26cm in height, it was created with outstanding precision and craftsmanship. However, it does not include moving parts, internal mechanisms, or lighting.

While CNC machinery was used for intricate elements such as the finely detailed hatches, the majority of the construction was carried out by hand.

The project took approximately six months to complete. Payment was structured in three stages: a 50% deposit to begin work, a further 30% as completion approached, and the remaining 20% upon delivery. The final cost also covered a custom-built wooden packing case, designed to safeguard the model during transit.

Our SS American Scout model was crafted primarily by hand using timber, acrylic, fibreglass, and chrome detailing, reflecting a high standard of skill and precision.

Before construction began, we worked closely with the client to finalise every detail—covering dimensions, aesthetics, design elements, budget, and schedule. This collaborative approach ensured clarity at every stage and helped avoid any misunderstandings.

The build started with the hull, which was carefully measured and assembled to exact specifications. Once completed, the focus shifted to the upper deck, where individual wooden planks were meticulously placed along the ship’s sides, gradually covering the internal framework. Structural supports for the cranes and funnels were then added, and a Scottish flag was hand-painted onto the ship’s distinctive yellow funnel.

Next, the painting process brought the model to life. The hull was finished in a deep crimson, with soft blue and white highlights, while the deck, cranes, and funnel were painted in a clean yellow. Authentic decals for Isbrandtsen and Flying Clipper were then applied to the sides for added accuracy.

In the final stages, the entire model was polished and refined. Railings were adjusted, the American flag was carefully positioned, and ‘New York’ was added beneath ‘Flying Clipper.’ To complete the display, the model was mounted on a custom wooden base with a nameplate, ensuring an elegant and professional presentation.

The client was thrilled with the final model, praising its exceptional craftsmanship and intricate details. Careful handling during shipping ensured it arrived in perfect condition, ready to be displayed.

Creating this bespoke cargo ship replica was a truly rewarding experience, and we look forward to bringing more unique projects to life in the future!
